Fibre optic cabling carries data as pulses of light rather than electrical signals, which means it can cover far longer distances without signal loss and is completely immune to electrical interference. It is the right choice for connecting separate buildings on a site, running a backbone between network switches on different floors, or anywhere that demands very high bandwidth.

Installing fibre optic cabling is a specialist task. Cables must be handled carefully to avoid damage to the glass core, and the ends must be terminated or spliced with precision equipment to ensure low signal loss. We install both multimode and single-mode fibre depending on your requirements - multimode for shorter runs within a building, single-mode for longer external runs or where maximum future bandwidth is a priority. Connectors are typically LC or SC type, and each link is tested after installation to confirm it meets performance standards.

Copper Cat6 cabling reaches its limits at 100 metres per run and is susceptible to interference from nearby power cables or machinery. Fibre has no such constraints on distance or interference, which makes it the practical solution for Cambridge business parks, university buildings, larger office campuses, or any site where two separate structures need to share a network.

We will discuss your current and likely future requirements before specifying fibre type and cable route. External runs between buildings require armoured outdoor-rated fibre, and the route through any walls or ducts needs to be agreed in advance to avoid disruption.

Multimode fibre optic cabling can support 10-Gigabit data transfer over runs of up to 300 metres, making it a practical choice for connecting buildings or floors on a single Cambridge site.

What you get

  • A look at the building before we quote, so the figure is based on what is actually there.
  • A free written quote, with what is included and what is not.
  • Work planned around the people using the building.
  • A walk-through at handover and the documents for what was installed.

What is not included

Written down on the quote, so nothing on this list turns up later as a surprise.

  • The internet line itself. That stays with your broadband or leased line provider, and we work with whatever you have.
  • Building work such as new ceilings or redecorating. If a cable route needs it, the quote says so.
  • Day-to-day support for your computers and laptops. That is your IT provider's job, and we are happy to work alongside them.

Questions

Questions about Fibre optic cabling

How is fibre optic cabling priced compared to standard copper network cabling?
Fibre optic cabling costs more per metre than copper Cat6, and the termination and testing equipment required is specialist, so installation costs are higher. For a typical building-to-building run of 50-150 metres with two fibre patch panels terminated and tested, budgets of £800-£2,000 are broadly realistic depending on the route complexity and cable type. Where copper simply cannot do the job - long distances or electrically noisy environments - fibre is the only practical option.
Do I need fibre optic cabling or will Cat6 copper cable be enough?
For most single-floor office installations with run lengths under 90 metres, Cat6 copper cabling is perfectly adequate and costs less. Fibre becomes the right choice when you need to connect separate buildings, when runs exceed 100 metres, or when cables must pass through areas with heavy electrical interference such as plant rooms or industrial equipment. If you are unsure, we can advise once we understand your site layout and bandwidth requirements.
How long does a fibre optic installation take?
A straightforward run between two nearby buildings on a Cambridge site, including termination and testing, can usually be completed in a single day. Larger installations involving multiple fibres, complex routing through existing ducts, or external groundworks will take longer and require more planning. We can give you a realistic timeframe once we have assessed the route.
